Great Forest News

Volume 1  Issue 2

  Good day!

It has been a busy time in Great Forest. Everyone is building or improving their homes after the cold winter.

I have been told that the Monarch butterflies are getting ready to fly north from their winter homes in South America. Some of them fly 3000 miles (4828 km) on their migration route! The oyamel trees in Mexico are one of their winter homes. Sometimes there are so many Monarch butterflies on a branch that it breaks! But this tree is a strong and can hold tens of thousands of this little insect. The other butterflies will be coming out of their winter homes called cocoons.

I’ve been cleaning out my owl home. Feathers are flying out the doorway!  Each year I molt. Old feathers fall out and new ones grow in. Because I live in Great Forest, my new feathers come in with more brown and green ones. My cousin, who lives in the North, molted and her feathers came in white! We match our environment for safety reasons.

I look very handsome in my new feathers although it may be hard for you to see me in the trees!

The Trees of Time

This newsletter is about three trees - the Tree of the Past, the Present, and the Future. Chrono, the Forest Timekeeper, grows them in his clearing.

They are mentioned in A Trilogy of The Great Forest Adventures. The dragon twins visit them to learn more about Unicorn.

By the way, the trilogy book will become a set of three books. That will make it easier to hold and read. The coffee table book is beautiful, but it is big!

The Tree of The Past

White Oak Tree

This ‘up-80-foot’ tall tree is found all over Great Forest. It lives a very long time – like 300 and sometimes 600 years!

This ‘king of all oaks’ is home for many different animals.

Birds build their nests all over its branches. The monarch butterflies land here for the warm months. The deer eat its acorns. They tell me these acorns are the sweetest of all.

A magic white oak is found in the clearing where Chrono lives. He  makes sure everything that ever happens in Great Forest is touched with magic and hidden in its roots.

However, he does charge a fee of emeralds and gold for the information. More about that another time.

The Tree of The Present

Willow Tree

This tree is found in the clearing of Chrono's home.

It needs lots of water to grow – and it does grow fast, up to 80 feet tall! Its beautiful branches hang to the ground like a waterfall. Walking inside them and you find a peaceful place.

Its In the Spring catkins, that look like furry caterpillars, hang down everywhere. Some butterflies and the deer like to eat its leaves.

In Chrono’s clearing the willow is The Tree of the Present.

When a question is asked, a leaf lets go of its branch and drifts slowly down talking as it falls. One leaf tells one fact. Because it whispers, the listener has to stand among its leafy branches and be very quiet.

The Tree of The Future

Magnolia  Tree

An ancient tree, the magnolia has been around for 95 million years! That is astounding! I don’t think that Great Forest is that old, but maybe I need to find out.

It blooms for weeks but mostly in the Spring. Its flowers are pink, white, and even purple depending upon the tree. This tree grows up to 80 feet tall. Birds chirp and sing in its branches. Forest Squirrel loves to sit there and listen to them sing.

The deer and squirrels stop by for a bite to eat.

Because it has pods, Chrono grows the magnolia.

Using his magic, he puts future events inside the tree’s pods. Ask your question and a pod turns yellow and jumps to your feet! Carefully peel back the layers and small pictures appear. They tell the future.

I enjoyed asking the animals of Great Forest about Chorno’s trees.

Great Forest is a marvelous and enchanting place to live.

Good-bye for now!

Who Is Owl?

Great Forest is my home. I live in a hole at the top of a tall tree. When I fly out of my home and up toward the clouds, I can see for miles.  I usually know what is happening in the forest and at the beach.  As an owl, it is important to know many things. This makes me smart. I ask questions of everyone and think about what they say. This makes me wise.

What's happening?

Are you reading the book,  "A Trilogy of The Great Forest Adventures?"

In the first book, Forest Squirrel and Beach Bird  are best friends ad write letters to each other

about the problems between the dragons and frogs - who are NOT best friends.

MAP

On the next page is a map that shows Great Forest

and its surrounding places.

In the distance behind the mountain range – it’s really big!! -  is the homeof the West Wind.

You will find out what happens there.

Far off in the ocean is an island where more dragons are found. It is so far away, it did not fit on the map!

You will have to imagine how far away it is. You willvisit there in the second Ancient Book.

Map Facts

Can you find Deep Pond at the bottom right of this map? The frogs live there.

At the top of High Mountain is a cave. Pegasus, a horse with wings, lives in that cave.

He is the guardian of a green lake.

To the left of Deep Pond - where the ocean meets the beach - is Ocean Wave City. Beach Bird and the starfish and Pelican live there.

An adventure happens there.

Above that are the Twin Lakes. They are part of the final adventure in the Trilogy.

Adventures take place everywhere!

Farewell Question

This is the end of this newsletter. I hope you are enjoying the stories of

The Great Forest Adventures.

When you look at the illustrations at the back of the book, notice this.

Everyone’s eyes are a shade of blue – even mine.

I asked Chrono, the forest timekeeper.

Why are everyone’s eyes a shade of blue?

He said it is because the forest is magical.

I will ask questions about his magic and

tell you what I find out in

Volume 1 Issue 2.

 Good-bye for now!
